Overall Length: 4ft
Max Beam: 43”
Propulsion: Draw sculling, poling, rowing
Traditional Construction (3/4” solid wood sides with a 1/4” plywood bottom)
Very Easy Beginner friendly build
Makes an excellent first boat building project or even first woodworking project.
Inspired by the traditional skin on frame coracle of the British Isles, the Cumberland Rover Warmouth 4 is designed to carry one adult on small waters (ponds, creeks, and slow moving rivers). It can be sculled like a traditional coracle, poled, or even rowed. Hull dimensions are 48” long, 43” wide, and 11 1/4” deep.
Be warned—this is a 4 foot boat—essentially the smallest possible design. Learning to propel and control such a small boat can be challenging. It takes some getting used to. The Warmouth is mainly a novelty project, but she makes a surprisingly practical fishing float or hard bodied river float tube. For those new to boat building, or even wood working in general, this is an excellent first project.
The sides and transoms are formed from a pair of 1 x 12 x 8 pine boards, the bottom planked with common 1/4in exterior plywood, and the hull assembled with deck screws and construction adhesive. This is a low cost, low stress project. It can be completed in an afternoon if you’re in a hurry, or a weekend if you take your time. It’s a 4ft boat. Don’t take it too seriously. Have fun and get creative.
